A Pavilion for Swimmers and Artists
Oslo, Norway
Jul 2023
This project began with a swim by the seaside, marking my own design exploration. A pavilion stretches out on the rocks by the sea, where simple architectural elements form the primary structure: a bridge-like diving platform, a thick wall accommodating shower and service spaces, and a roof providing shelter from the wind and rain. Beneath the roof, waves crash against the rocks, welcoming visitors who come to rest. There are some small irregularities on the rocks, perhaps allowing some rooms for artifacts from the unkowns.
The site is located on a peninsula in the southern part of Oslo, facing the Oslo Fjord. During the bright summer days, the expansive beaches become a paradise for swimmers. Diving, barbecuing, and relaxing visitors leisurely come here to spend joyful moments with family, friends, or by themselves.
The rocks are the primary natural elements of the site, and determining what kind of structure can connect these rocks to the sea becomes the starting point. The architectural form aims to be strong yet humble, featuring a bridge that can serve as a diving platform, connecting the rocks to the water's surface, along with a thick wall that can accommodate rooms. Like a tent, a lightweight roof naturally settles on the bridge and the wall, allowing the building to easily rest on the horizon. Two linear elements intersect in the middle of the form, serving as a vital connection between the rocks and the sea, as well as between the architecture and nature. The action of "passing through" is emphasized here.
The thick wall not only serves as crucial structural support but also provides opportunities for the emergence of rooms. Showers, staircases, small rooms for storage, or temporary exhibitions can be accommodated within it. The two linear elements are not perpendicular, and they sensually overlap with each other. The horizontal roof and the sprawling rocks define the form and posture of the void. Facing the sea, people can sit or lie down here to rest, or seek shelter from the rain. If someone creates some interesting objects, the nooks and crannies of the rocks also provide opportunities for them to be seen.
