A Mountain Cabin

Hoddevik, Norway
Spring 2024 | AHO | Supervisor: Søren S. Sørensen, Sofia Cunha, Pedro Ribeiro

The site for the project is Hoddevik - on the west coast of Nordfjord. Hoddevik lies on Stadlandet, a peninsula in Stad municipality on the west coast of Norway. The peninsula is known for its beautiful beaches, dramatic landscape and weather, unique cultural history, and fantastic surfing conditions.

This is a cabin located on a hillside. The design starts with the structure and the morphological intimacy with the landscape. A branch-like structure serves as the basic unit, with four units arranged in a curved line. The aim is to provide simple and efficient space while allowing the building form to gently embrace the earth. Four steel cables anchor the cabin in the rock crevices, enabling it to withstand extreme weather conditions.

The section further illustrates the interaction between the interior space and the landscape. In this section, four windows bring the site's four key elements into the cabin. The ground floor bedroom offers a direct view of the nearby rocks, while the glass floor in the corridor overlooks the beautiful coastline. On the second floor, there are two windows: a large window with a panoramic view of the valley and a small circular window for looking up at the mountain peak.

Upon reaching the mountain, people enter the cabin via a small outdoor staircase. The ground floor space is compact and simply divided. The living space is located on the second floor, which is accessed by climbing a ladder.
